Comparison between e-cigarette and analogue cigarette puffs: what changes? Here are all the clarifications
Are you an ex-smoker who has decided to switch to vaping? Are you thinking of quitting smoking? Or are you simply looking for references so that you don’t risk vaping too much?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, you probably wondered how many puffs of an electronic cigarette correspond to one analogue cigarette.
But is it possible to compare the puffs taken with an e-cigarette to those taken with a traditional cigarette?
Read on to find out more because we will go into more detail in the following paragraphs.
Shots taken with an e-cigarette and an analogue cigarette: is it possible to make a comparison?
One of the most frequently asked questions of those who approach vaping as a former vaping enthusiast is almost always the question: “How many puffs of vape liquid are equivalent to an analogue cigarette?”.
Answering this question is by no means simple. Or rather, it isn’t very easy to give a precise answer because when vaping, there are so many factors at play that can vary from case to case.
For example, they can change.
- composition of the e-liquid base (there can be differences between the percentages of PG and VG);
- the amount of liquid nicotine;
- the value of the coil;
- the voltage and vaping liquid settings.
Suppose you compare two different e-cigarettes in which other liquids have been refilled, essentially, likely. In that case, the vaping patterns will also change: some vapers will take longer, more powerful puffs and those who will tend to take shorter, less intense ones.
It means that even if you work out how many puffs an analogue cigarette lasts (around 10-14), it is impossible to make an exact comparison with e-cigarettes.

If, however, you would like to have at least some indicative data at hand, we could compare the doses of nicotine contained in e-cigarette liquids and that present in classic ‘blondes’.
For example, 10 ml of liquid corresponds to how many cigarettes?
- vape liquid with 4 mg/ml nicotine: corresponds to about 50 analogue cigarettes;
- vape liquid at 6 mg/ml nicotine: corresponds to approximately 75 analogue cigarettes;
- vape liquid at 9 mg/ml nicotine: corresponds to approx. 120 analogue cigarettes;
- vape liquid with 12 mg/ml nicotine: corresponds to approximately 150 analogue cigarettes.
As we have already made clear above, these comparisons cannot be considered precise because there are always too many variables at play in the world of vaping. Not only that, but the amount of nicotine absorbed by the body is only 25% of the amount indicated on the e-liquid bottle.
To put it simply, filling a 2 ml tank with a 4 nicotine liquid is the equivalent of about one pack of 20 light cigarettes. So 1 ml of this e-liquid mixture corresponds to 10 cigarettes; if the nicotine concentration were higher, however, it would correspond to more.
Goodbye nicotine: with vaping, you can gradually decrease your nicotine intake
In the previous paragraph, we made it clear that it is impossible to compare e-cigarettes and analogue cigarettes based on the number of puffs. At most, a comparison can be made by looking at the levels of nicotine absorbed by the body.
We know that nicotine intake is addictive, that it is a harmful substance and that it should not be used. However, when using an e-cigarette, it is straightforward to gradually reduce the amount of this product dissolved in vape liquids until you get rid of it altogether.
All you have to do is refill the e-cigarette with a liquid that is increasingly low in nicotine; so that even if you vape for as long as a regular cigarette, your body will absorb less and less nicotine.
The important thing is to overcome the addiction for the sake of your body.
To achieve this, you can choose to buy ready-made nicotine liquids for electronic cigarettes, or you can purchase base, vape flavourings and liquid nicotine so that you can dose the liquid nicotine precisely and entirely individually.

To conclude
Although vaping and smoking are two apparently very similar practices, as we have seen, they differ in many ways.
The electronic cigarette can help you quit smoking, but only if you use it wisely and carefully.
To successfully kick the smoking habit with an e-cigarette, remember to use only safe and tested products and take less nicotine until you get rid of it completely!
