Here are the characteristics of the best coils by aroma and how to maintain them
Has your passion for vaping led you to surf the Internet searching for trivia, vaping techniques and components for your e-cig? There is nothing strange about this: many vapers, in addition to hanging out on the web to buy liquid nicotine, e-cigarette liquids and vaping flavours, are constantly searching for information to expand their knowledge of this practice. However, you may have read something about complex coils and want to know more about them.
In the following lines, I will tell you about these types of resistance, explain what they are useful for and suggest two methods for good maintenance on them.
Complex coils: what they are and why they are used
The heating element is a crucial component of the electronic cigarette; its function is to heat the cotton impregnated with vaping liquids to activate vaping. Typically, handmade coils made by vapers are assembled from the appropriately twisted resistive wire. This wire forms a spiral coil that has the task of ‘housing’ the vaping cotton.
Since the thickness of the wire affects both the quantity of vapour and the aromatic yield, it is necessary to find the right balance between these factors. A thick wire heats up more and generates more vapour, but requires more energy. In addition, cooling times are longer and the vaporized aromas are impacted by the heat. To enable the most demanding vapers to achieve abundant vaping without losing quality, complex coils were born.
These resistors are obtained by intertwining two or more wires of fine thickness, and the result is a large vaping surface that does not impair the vaping quality and has a higher cooling capacity than a single coarse wire. Complex coils were mainly introduced for pulmonary vaping but, over time, have also found their way into the devices of vapers who prefer cheek shots.
But the effectiveness and overall quality of these resistors are not the only aspects that set them apart; in fact, they are also appreciated because they last longer than conventional coils. Of course, to be able to enjoy this peculiarity, it is advisable to use the e-cig correctly and maintain its components, including the coil, regularly.

Coil maintenance methods
If you always want to get the most out of your electronic cigarette and enjoy the best possible aromatic experience when vaping your favourite fruity or creamy liquids, I recommend that you get into the habit of carefully maintaining complex resistors. As I mentioned before, doing so will ensure better performance and prolong their life.
There are two periodic cleaning techniques you can use for these components:
- the Manual Wash;
- the Dry Burn.
Manual washing is a classic but still effective method involving hot water, soap, and a stiff bristle brush. This procedure is carried out by leaving the coil in place but, to avoid problems considering subsequent use, it is essential to rinse and dry the device properly with paper towels.
Dry Burn consists of activating the resistance with the deck open, lacking liquid and cotton. Before proceeding with this coil regeneration, however, I recommend setting a lower wattage than the one used for vaping. With this method, any fouling and impurities in the coil are burnt off as soon as the coil becomes incandescent. To remove the residue, simply use cold water and gently brush the heating element (once cooled, of course).
This method is useful for getting rid of dirt in the most inaccessible places on the coil, but should not be used too often because stressing the resistance dry exposes the wires to the risk of damage. What are the most common types of complex coils?
Well, now that you know how to maintain them, let’s see what are the various types of complex coils available on the market.
The first distinction to make is between Parallel Coils (which are made from parallel wires) and Twisted Coils (the result of assembling twisted wires). Starting with these elementary models opens up a world of resistances that differ in the number and thickness of the wires and other characteristics. Below you will find a list of the most popular complex coils:
- Clapton Coils, are obtained by wrapping a Wrap (thin wire) around a Core (thick wire);
- the Fused Clapton Coil, follows the principle of the classic Clapton with the difference that two or more thinner wires are used instead of the Core;
- the Staggered Coil, which consists of a Core of two or more Claptons wrapped in turn by a Wrap;
- the Alien Coil has the special feature of having a Wrap wrapped around a Core assembled with three parallel wires.
In addition to these models, other variants are best suited to the many atomizers on the market.

In conclusion
If you have read this article, you have likely understood how much each component affects the quality of vaping. Complex coils allow you to obtain a thick and substantial vapour without giving up the creamy or fruity flavours you love so much.
